1. World cultural heritage site, “Shimogamo shrine” special viewing – 8 to 31 July

Once in a while, the shrines rebuild the building that enshrines their God; therefore, they would have to move their god to another building. This event is called “Sengu”. For many shrines, this is a big event and this year a world cultural heritage site, “Shimogamo shrine” will be having their “Sengu”. This is an event which is held only once every 21 years. And as part of the “Sengu”, many of the national treasures such as “Nagaredukuri” will be on display. If you are ever in Kyoto, this is definetely a must see event!

2. World cultural heritage site, “Kamigamo shrine” special viewing – 8 to 31 July

During this event, you can visit two of Kamigamo shrine’s national treasures which were registered as world cultural heritages, while being guided by the priest. Kamigamo shrine will have the “Honden” which enshrines the Kamowake Ikazuchi no Kami (Thunder god) and “Gonden”, with two of the national treasures on display. You can also enjoy the 41 cultural assets of Kamigamo shrine as well as much more in the “Shosengu”. Don’t miss this opportunity to see and feel the energy of these 1000 year old treasures.

3. Wall paintings of “Kurosyoin” special display – 1 to 31 July

This event will be held as a part of the Nijo Castle 400 year anniversary. In commemoration of the 150 year anniversary from the Taiseihokan, wall paintings of “Kurosyoin” will be on display for the first time in 7 years. You can enjoy a luxurious “stage of paintings” such as the painting of the snow covered great pine and red plum illustrating the atmosphere of early spring on the northern area behind where the shogun would sit, the paintings of the cherry blossoms and azaleas blooming on the east, west and walls of the room, and many more.

“Polish Techniques – Van Cleef & Arpels High Jewelry and Japanese Crafts” is an exhbition where Japanese and French “techniques” and “skills” are used to create beautiful works, and are displayed. You can enjoy Van Cleef & Arpels foundation’s high jewelry techniques from start till now and the traditional art produced in the Meji era of Japan. 5. Bakumatsu Douran!! Ryouma, Shinsengumi – 1 to 9 July

“Bakumatsu Douran!! Ryouma, Shinsengumi” is an event held in commemoration of the year after the fierce war of the samurai era ended, and the Meiji government was established. A wide variety of documents from that time when the battle of Toba and Fushimi broke out such as the Shinsengumi, Sakamoto Ryoma, and other famous emperors and daimyo are displayed. It is a must see event for those who like Shinsengumi or that era. Don’t miss this event held in the key location of that time, Kyoto!

6. The 2017 TANGO Yasaka Noryosai Firework Fesitval – 15 July

“The 2017 TANGO Yasaka Noryosai Firework Fesitval” will be held at Tango Okoku “Shoku no Miyako”, Yasakacho, Kyoutango-shi. The main event is the fireworks after the “Noryosai”. In addition to various kinds of fireworks, such as the Star Mine and “Tora no Kyo”, memorial fireworks of Yasaka Noryosai and musical fireworks will be launched. You can relax and enjoy the fireworks in the open grass space.

7. Kifune no Kawadoko – 1 to 31 July

“Kifune no Kawadoko” is a restaurant where you can enjoy delicious dishes alongside the Kifunegawa, said to be the back seat of Kyoto. Kawadoko are a traditional Kyoto riverside restaurants that opens only in the summer. Kifune no Kawadoko is quite unique for being so close to the riverbed that you can almost touch the water if you reach. You can enjoy wonderful Kyoto cuisine while listening to the waterflow of Kifunegawa being freed from the summer heat and bustle of the city.

9. Kamogawa Nouryouyuka – 1 to 31 July

After the end of the Sengoku era, peace returned to the Kawahara of Kamogawa, and many stores opened as well as these wealthy merchants rested in tea shops around the Kamogawa. Since that time, Kamogawa has been loved as a great place to relax, and the summer only “Nouryouyuka” started. Many people now enjoy the Kamogawa Nouryouyuka between May 1 and September 30. “Noryo” means “to stay cool in the summer”, and “yuka” is a place to eat and drink while enjoying the cool wind from the waterside and river. The Kamogawa Nouryouyuka is the summer tradition of Kyoto and visiting will let you experience this relaxing event that many locals enjoy during the summer.

10. The 68th Kyoto Antique Fair – 1 to 2 July

“The 68th Kyoto Antique Fair” is an exhibition sale event where antique art items from not only Kyoto but also from all over Japan and the world gather to be sold. Over 330 booths and over 150,000 items will be displayed making it the largest antique event in Western Japan. Every year the scale grows, and dealers and antique art lovers from all of the world gather. There are various genres such as Kyoto furniture, folding screens, hanging scrolls, ukiyoe, traditional Asian clothing, and Western European vintage accessories, making it an event that you can also enjoy by just watching.
