Must-see! Owaritushima Tenou Festival – 22 to 23 July

The “Owaritushima Tenou Festival” is one of Japan’s 3 great river festivals, and it is said to be the most graceful among all the summer festivals held in country.
Enshrined on 540 A.D., the historic festival is held at the Tsushima Temple, where the famous Oda Nobunaga worshiped as the patron god. This year’s festival dates are July 22 and 23.
On the 22nd, during the eve of the festival, a boat unique to Ritsushima lit by a lantern, slowly and mystically rows across the Tenou River, playing the Ritsushima flute.
During the morning festival on the next day, while the 6 orchestra ships play music, 10 samurais of the leading ship holding halberds dive into the river and swim toward the shrine.
This festival is registered as an important cultural property, and anyone would want to have a look.

Must-see! Nishio Gion Festival – 14 to 16 July

The Nishio Gion Festival is said to have started during the Edo Period at Ibun Shrine, which protects the castle town of NIshio, as a ritual to ward off evil.
On the 15th, the city center becomes a promenade, a large procession parades the old-fashioned castle town, and a traditional portable shine, as well as a lion dance makes an appearance.
On the 16th, the 22nd “Citizen’s Dance”, in which children and adults of many different groups participate with costumes and dances of various taste to cap off the festival.

1. Nojima Festival (Ship Parade) – 9 July

This festival is held every year on the second week of July to pray for the safety at sea and rich haul, and it is held in the Nojima Shrine, located in the southern side of Shinojima, where the god of fishermen is enshrined. This year’s festival date is July 9th. The fireworks on the first day are going to be launched off the shore of the fishing harbor, and the large fireworks spreading above the sea is very beautiful and mystical. The main event of the second day would definitely be the heroic fishing fleet parade. The sight of the 80 ships with flags of rich haul held up high, departing from the Shinojima Parlor, sliding the surface of the water is a masterpiece. By all means, take a look at the breathtaking festival of the sea.

2. Toyohama Red Snapper Festival – 22 to 23 July

The Chita Peninsula spreads to the south of Nagoya. At its tip, there is Toyohama City of Minamichita Town, which is ranked number 1 in fish catches in the Aichi Prefecture.
In this area blessed with seafood, the most popular traditional summer feature would be the unusual festival, the “Red Snapper Festival”. The Red Snapper Festival prays for a good catch and safety at sea, and a 10~18m paper mache red snapper parades the city of Toyohama. The 5 red snappers varying in sizes are held by about 60 men, and they parade the town as if it were swimming in the ocean with its moving tail and straight fins, and this somewhat ridiculous but unique sight is one of the main attractions of the festival.

3. Kariyamando Festival – 29 to 30 July

The “Kariyamando Festival” is a festival of the Akiha Shrine. It is called the “popular strange festival” and it is a summer festival representing Kariya.
The Akiya Shrine is worshiped as the god of fire.
The “mandou” is the paper mache dolls shaped vividly to kabuki art and samurais. The largest goes up to 5 meter tall, 3 meters wide, weighs 60 kilos, and a young man carries it alone, dancing along with drums, flutes, and festival music.
On the first day, around 10 large mandous and several children mandous parade around the city. On the second day, each mandou dances within their temple grounds. During sunset, fire is set on the colorful and large mandous, and the mandous floating in the darkness of the summer attracts anyone who is watching..
