・Tokaido Shinkansen (via Maibara)

Ride the Tokaido Shinkansen 2 hours and 20 minutes to Maibara in Shiga prefecture, before transferring onto the Shirasagi Limited Express, which will take you to Fukui. One-way and round-trip tickets cost 14,260 yen and 28,520 yen, respectively. Total travel time is around 3.5 hours.

・Tokaido Shinkansen (via Kyoto)

Ride the Tokaido Shinkansen (Nozomi) 2 hours and 20 minutes to Kyoto. At Kyoto, catch the Thunderbird Limited Express to Fukui; this leg is about 1.5 hours. One-way and round-trip tickets cost 15,610 yen and 31,220 yen, respectively. Total travel time is around 4 hours.

If you’re willing to put in a little extra work to save money, take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya (approximately 1 hour 41 minutes); take another shinkansen from Nagoya to Maibara (28 minutes); and finally ride a JR train from Maibara to Nagahama (9 minutes), Nagahama to Tsuruga (37 minutes) and Tsuruga to Fukui (58 minutes from Maibara). The transfers are cumbersome, but your one-way fare is only 13,540 yen with this route.
