The most convenient way to get to Uji is by train.
Two train lines run through Uji: the JR Nara Line and the Keihan Uji Line, so you can easily access it no matter which area of Kyoto you're staying in.

This is the adjoining cafe of Uji's long-established "Itohkyuemon". The signature menu item here is "Cha-soba", noodles kneaded with matcha. Many matcha sweets are also available.
During my student days, I often had lunch here with my friends. I remember being moved when I took my first bite of the cha-soba, with the rich aroma and flavor of matcha spreading throughout my mouth.

It's not unusual to wait for more than 30 minutes at Nakamura Tokichi Main Store or Itohkyuemon, so if you want to enjoy Uji food while saving time on a half-day trip, for example, I recommend enjoying tea or matcha soft serve ice cream while walking along the approach.
