Shibuya is one of the most famous areas in Tokyo, known for its iconic scramble crossing and the Hachiko dog statue. It's the center of youth culture, where the latest fashion and trends converge, constantly evolving into an exciting area. For me, it's a familiar place I've frequently visited since my student days.

It's also known for its art galleries and live music venues, giving it an artistic and musical side. Recently, it has gained attention as the setting for many anime shows.

Popular with not only Japanese but foreign tourists as well, Shibuya has a wide variety of dining options. Especially at night, izakayas (Japanese-style pubs) and bars open up one after another, creating a lively atmosphere. Shibuya is an area brimming with stimulation and discoveries that you must visit.

Breakfast in Japan

Japanese breakfast

The traditional Japanese breakfast, called "ichiju-sansai," consists of a bowl of rice, a soup, and three side dishes, providing a well-balanced nutritious meal. The typical side dishes include a main dish like grilled fish or an egg dish, plus two other nutrient-rich dishes such as natto (fermented soybeans) or vegetables.

However, in today's busy society, lifestyles have changed, and so have breakfast habits. More people are opting for convenient options like bread, cereal, or grab-and-go items from convenience stores.

Additionally, with the spread of cafe culture, many now enjoy breakfast at restaurants. To cater to this change, restaurants offer a variety of breakfast menus to meet different needs. The ability to choose a breakfast style that suits one's mood is one reason why dining out for breakfast has become popular.

Morning in Shibuya

While Shibuya is known as the "city that never sleeps," with crowds spilling into its izakayas and bars at night, the morning presents a completely different side. JR Shibuya Station is crowded with commuters and transfer passengers, but since most commercial facilities don't open until around 10 or 11 am, the morning hours are relatively quiet and peaceful.

Some izakayas do offer lunch, but their main business is at night. In contrast to the night's liveliness, the morning in Shibuya allows you to enjoy a calm, relaxed time.

Katsuo to Bonta is a popular onigiri (rice ball) specialty shop in Shibuya. Using premium rice and dashi broth made from bonito flakes, they serve plump, flavorful rice balls generously stuffed with fillings. A must-try!

My recommendations are the "Tenpaku no Okaka" and "Hidakasan Kombu." Simple but lets you savor the delicious flavors of the ingredients. Onigiri is reasonably priced between 200-300 yen each. A delightful bargain!

In addition to onigiri, they also offer oden (Japanese hot pot) and ochazuke (rice with green tea poured over). The shop is centered around a counter, and takeout is available. If you want a casual, healthy Japanese breakfast experience, this is the place to go.

BUY ME STAND is a stylish cafe popular for its sandwiches. The green-based interior has a nostalgic vibe, making it very Instagram-worthy!

They offer many unique sandwich combinations, and as an indecisive person, I always have a hard time choosing. But the one I recommend trying first is the "Apple Cheeks." The sweetness of the apples harmonizes exquisitely with the saltiness of the camembert cheese for a luxurious taste.

Sandwiches range from 1,000 to 1,400 yen, and they also serve coffee and fresh juices.
