Shibuya, home to the Scramble Crossing, said to be the world's busiest intersection, is known as one of Tokyo's premier youth districts, visited by millions of people daily. Recently, it has also gained attention as the setting for popular anime.

As a trendsetter, Shibuya has long been equipped with numerous fashion buildings, making it an ideal environment for shopping. Particularly in the 90s, the term "Shibuya-kei fashion" was born, and Japan's unique “gyaru fashion” and men's ”gyaru fashion” also originated from Shibuya.

Music shops favored by these groups also gathered, establishing Shibuya's aspect as a music town. Recently, shops for subcultures such as anime and games have also appeared and gained popularity.

In this article,I'll introduce representative shopping spots in Shibuya. There are also some miscellaneous goods stores that I, a shopping enthusiast, often visit, making it enjoyable for more than just young people.

Let's spend a day in Shibuya, shopping during the day and then experiencing Shibuya's nightlife at izakayas and bars.

Shibuya109

Located at the bottom of Dogenzaka, Shibuya 109 is such an iconic shopping building that it's often said, "If you're talking about Shibuya, you're talking about Shibuya 109."

Since the 90s, it has been called the holy land of gyaru fashion, a uniquely Japanese style, and has been an icon of Shibuya. Currently, it's a building with dozens of stores selling ladies' fashion for teenagers. It's recommended for those who want to see Japan's cute & gyaru fashion.

Furthermore, in the 2020s, Shibuya 109 has greatly updated its previous gyaru-oriented direction. Various types of shops have opened one after another, making it enjoyable for a wider range of shoppers.

Shibuya Hikarie

Shibuya Hikarie

Shibuya Hikarie is a 34-story high-rise building located at the east exit of Shibuya Station. The shopping floors are from the 2nd basement to the 5th floor, with cafes, restaurants, and theaters from the 6th floor, and offices on the higher floors.

I recommend the Sky Lobby on the 11th floor and the Toyoko Norengai on the 2nd and 3rd basement floors. The Sky Lobby on the 11th floor is a free observation floor where you can view the entire Shibuya area.

Also, Toyoko Norengai is similar to the "depachika" (department store basement floors), selling uniquely Japanese delicatessen items and high-end sweets. I always visit when I go to Shibuya to find delicious deli items. For those who like touring Japanese department store basements, the famous Toyoko Norengai is an essential spot.

Shibuya Cat Street

Shibuya Cat Street is a fashion street located in an alley off Meiji Street, connecting Shibuya and Harajuku. It's a mix of international high-end brand shops, domestic street brand shops, and vintage clothing stores.

It's an area that not only has fashionable clothing shops but also atmospheric cafes. The fusion of luxury brands and the unique street fashion characteristic of Shibuya and Harajuku attracts people with its distinctive atmosphere.

On weekdays, it's usually not very crowded, so I sometimes go there to leisurely stroll and enjoy the stylish atmosphere. It's a recommended place for fashion lovers.

Nintendo TOKYO

Nintendo Tokyo
Source: Official Website

This is the official shop of the game company Nintendo, located on the 6th floor of Shibuya Parco. They sell and offer experiences with game consoles and software, and of course, character goods are also available.

Although small in scale, it's a shop that Nintendo fans should definitely check out. On the same floor, there are several game and anime shops including Pokémon Center and CAPCOM STORE TOKYO. There's also a rest area decorated with Nintendo characters on the rooftop.

It's an exciting store for game lovers, but it can get extremely crowded on weekends and holidays, sometimes requiring numbered tickets. Make sure to visit with plenty of time to spare.

Pokémon Center Shibuya

Pokemon Center

On the 6th floor of Shibuya Parco is the Pokémon Center Shibuya, a must-see for Pokémon fans worldwide. It's an official shop selling Pokémon game software, cards, plush toys, and other merchandise.

The Shibuya store features a giant Mewtwo object and also offers fashion-forward clothing items like T-shirts. It's always crowded, but visitor satisfaction is high, with tricks to entertain everyone from hardcore Pokémon fans to casual fans.

My personal recommendation is the custom T-shirt where you can choose your favorite character. As there can be quite a queue for creation, it's smoother to visit early in the morning.

ONE PIECE Mugiwara Store

MUGIWARA STORE
Source: Official Website

ONE PIECE Mugiwara Store is the official store where you can buy official merchandise from the popular manga "ONE PIECE". With an overwhelming number of products, it's an irresistible space for fans.

At the Shibuya store, there's a life-size figure of the popular character Shanks, and you can put on a straw hat and feel like Luffy. There are many other points of interest, including life-size figures of other characters and unique store decorations that recreate the world of the work. It's a store where I tend to linger too.

Like other anime stores, it can get very crowded, and you may need to queue for entry and checkout, so be prepared.

Disney Store

Disney Store

The Disney Store Shibuya Koen-dori is known for its castle-inspired exterior, and the interior monuments and decorations are also elaborate. The spiral staircase with different wallpaper on each floor, monuments of Pinocchio and Toy Story, just walking inside the store is exciting!

The store has three floors from the 1st to the 3rd floor. My favorite is "Wendy's Room" from Peter Pan, which can be seen on the 3rd floor. It's very lovely, so please check it out. The Shibuya store also has Tokyo-exclusive and Shibuya-exclusive goods.

Previously, you could buy Tokyo Disneyland park tickets here, but as of June 2024, this is no longer possible, so please be aware.

Miscellaneous Goods

MUJI

MUJI
Source: Official Website

There's no better store than MUJI if you're looking for simple, high-quality miscellaneous goods, stationery, and clothing. In Japanese MUJI stores, food products including snacks are also abundant.

High-quality, low-priced snacks are especially recommended. What I particularly want you to see is the "Dagashi" series, which are cheap, common snacks traditionally eaten in Japan. These are uniquely Japanese snacks and perfect as souvenirs.

The Shibuya store spans 6 floors from the 1st basement to the 5th floor of the SEIBU department store. As a large store, it has a rich and easy-to-see product lineup, and the interior is neat and clean. As it's connected to Loft, it might be good to compare and shop at these two different atmosphere miscellaneous goods stores.

LOFT

At LOFT, you can buy high-quality, well-designed stationery and miscellaneous goods perfect for souvenirs. The Shibuya store is large, spanning from the 1st basement to the 6th floor. They handle stationery, gift & character goods, interior items, travel goods, kitchen items, beauty products, and more.

There are many unique idea products that you can only find at Loft, and the product lineup is so extensive that you never get tired of looking. It's a store where I often find myself spending hours without realizing it.

Popular among overseas tourists are high-quality Japanese-made stationery, including Zebra ballpoint pens. Additionally, kitchen gadgets useful for Japanese cooking, anime character goods, and cosmetic products are also recommended.

MEGA Don Quijote

MEGA Don Quijote
Source: TripAdvisor

Don Quijote is famous for its cramped interior filled with products. True to its MEGA name, the Shibuya store is an 8-story building packed with all kinds of products.

Recently, it has specialized in catering to tourists, with cosmetics, alcohol, snacks, miscellaneous goods, and unique party goods being particularly popular. You can make tax-free purchases at the 8th-floor register by presenting your passport.

While Don Quijote stores exist throughout Tokyo and Japan, each store has different product lineups and discount rates. If you absolutely want to buy your desired product at a low price, it might be worth checking other stores if you have time.

Music

TOWER RECORDS

TOWER RECORDS
Source: Official Website

In the 90s, Shibuya's Tower Records was such an iconic store that it influenced the Japanese music market. Like other CD shops, it faced difficulties in the digital age.

However, with sensible recommendations and displays, release events, and collaborative cafes, it has once again attracted people as a place to experience the joy of holding and buying CDs.

It's bustling with pure music fans, as well as idol, K-POP, and anime fans, with each section thriving.

In February 2024, it reopened after renovation, expanding the classical music section. 30,000 nostalgic vinyl records were also added. Please check out the evolving Tower Records Shibuya.

HMV record shop is a record specialty store located in Udagawa-cho. While CDs are also available, the focus is on vinyl records. It deals with new and used items across two floors, 1st and 2nd.

It's smaller than Tower Records, which some people might find more comfortable. The price range is slightly higher, but they have a good stock of famous records.

They handle all genres including famous Western and Japanese songs. If you're looking for something specific, it might be worth checking out this place. There's also a small gallery at the back of the 2nd floor where you can enjoy art.

Udagawa-cho used to have a concentration of record shops that attracted passionate support. Among them, Face Records is a legendary shop known as a specialist in black music.

I've explained about shopping spots in Shibuya. While Shibuya encompasses various cultures, it's not just shopping spots that are abundant - there are also plenty of restaurants. After enjoying shopping, let's savor the nightlife of Shibuya at izakayas and bars.

If you're new to Shibuya and don't know where to go, we recommend Magical Trip's Shibuya Bar Hopping Night Tour in Tokyo. It's a plan where you can enjoy meals and drinks at three bars, focusing on a variety of meat dishes including teppanyaki, meat sushi, and Japanese-style steak.

Shibuya is a city that can't be fully explored in just one day. If you have the chance, visit multiple times and explore all the countless attractive shopping spots and bars!
