The north side of Japan, Hokkaido has lower temperature than other area, and the cherry will be blooming finally in May. In such Hokkaido, many events are crowdedly held in May. This time, we will introduce 3 popular events that make us feel the spring. These are Hanami, Japanese traditional Koinobori, Umeshu Shiinkai.

１. Hokkaido Jingu’s cherry and plum – The end of Apr. ～ middle of May in 2018

Hokkaido Jingu has been famous for the most beautiful Sakura spot in Hokkaido. It is rare in all over Japan, we can enjoy seeing both Sakura and another kinds of flowers. There are about 1400 of Sakura trees such as Ezoyama Sakura and Someiyoshino, and about 250 of plum trees such as Kobai and Hakubai. Especially, the scenery of cherry blossom trees standing in a row in both side of the main street is amazing. And there is Ume garden surrounded by cherry trees ahead.
During the Hanami season, there are about 40 of food stalls will be installed and lively crowded with many people. 「Jingu no Umeshu」that is made from plum cultivated in the shrine is can be purchased there. It is good for the gift. Let’s enjoy late spring with Bento or BBQ under the Sakura in historical Hokkaido Jingu.

2. Jouzankei Onsen Keiryu Koinobori – Apr.14th ～ May. 6th in 2018

Jouzankei Onsen is known as good hot-spring spot in Hokkaido. This hot-spring town is spreading around the main stream of Toyohira river. About 400 of several kinds of Koinobori will be raised in May to celebrate the Feast of Flags―the Boys' Festival. Koinobori is Japanese old tradition. It used to be held to pray for male‘s promotion and health in each home. There are red, blue, black, and green Koinobori is blowing in the wind. It is so balmy scenery. These Koinoboris are given away by residents in Hokkaido. There will be Koinobori event not only around Toyohira River, but also Jouzankei Shrine and food bath spot. The whole region are trying to liven up the spring tradition.

3. Otaru Umeshu Festival 2018 – Apr. 20th ～ May. 6th in 2018

The Tanaka Brewer is old brewery located in Otaru that will hold the tasting event for Umeshu and Ume wine between April and May. It is called 「Otaru Umeshu Festival」. In this event, about 20 kinds of Umeshu and Ume wine from Tanaka brewery and another various parts of Hokkaido will be served. Of those Umeshu, there is Umeshu that won a prize on Japan Umeshu fair. We can taste various kinds of Umeshu there.
Umeshu has sweet taste and tend to be easy to drink for the people who don’t drink much. It is also popular as a gift in Japan. We can enjoy drinking it on the rocks style or with soda. Otaru Umeshu Festival is the party that allow us to try various kinds of good Umeshu and Ume wine at the same time, we can find our favorite one and purchase it as a gift.
